Encaustix: 'Illumination' - 30"x30" - cradled birch wood panel

ENCAUSTIC PROCESS

Derived from the ancient process of Encaustics, my paintings are created using formulas of heated beeswax, damar resin, and/or carnauba wax; applied and fused onto wood panels, by heat torch. Many methods and approaches to to this medium are prevelant in my work, by the application of pigments, oil paints, oil sticks/bars, gypsum, purified sand, archival specialty papers (including encaustic monotypes), and other mixed media materials. Most of the encaustic pieces are created intuitively, however, the transfers incorporated originate from my own drawings, computer art, and manipulated digital photography. The transparent surfaces are conscientiously comprised of smooth finishes , while other works are unleashed with layers, textures, and/or harboring embedded objects. This medium provides translucent effects in matte, sheen, and polished consistencies. I have received intensive encaustic training with R&F's, Ellen Koment, at her studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was an encaustic and (oil) painting instructor at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, in Vero Beach, Florida. Currently, I am a full time studio artist, in the Chicago network area.
